This one’s a double which…feels very timely as I watch a hundred or so Tennesseans I’ve admired for most of my life exercise their right to remain silent while our state, on paper anyway, tries to overturn an election.
I read and reviewed a book by Susan Neiman, moral philosopher extraordinaire, over a year ago. It’s called Learning From The Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil, and its relevance to our moment is breathtaking. If we don’t describe and respond to the moral betrayals occurring around us, our consent is presumed and we become complicit. Here’s the review.
AND THEN, more recently, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Neiman as part of Belmont’s Humanities symposium. It’s on video. Spoiler alert: I have a beard.
Stay safe, everyone.
Thanks, David. Wonderful interview and I’ve ordered the book from my local bookseller.
