The above image is Sarah taking in some popular culture in Milan the other day.
We had coffee across the street before we went in. The video for the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” was playing on a television behind the bar. I decided the collective unconscious or the holy spirit saw fit to make that a question that might accompany me as I prepared my heart for Leonardo’s handiwork.
Art is an act of integration. To be experienced as an act of integration, it is sometimes helpful to be made aware of art’s context. The image above can be accessed in what was once a refectory in a convent.
I love the door part. Folks would eat with this image overlooking them and then they'd go out through the door. I don’t know what any of them made of it. But I imagine some of them might have stepped through the threshold and imagined they themselves were entering into the drama of trying hard to love themselves and others and to not be horrible and to make the most of what is and what was and what will be.
Maybe they saw themselves as a part of that drama while they were eating and communicating with one another too.
Maybe there’s no getting away from such dramas.
Love is the metric.
Thanks for hanging in here with me, y’all.
Are you in Milan?
