Language & Brutality
Here’s a writing tip: Write words in the margins of what you’re reading with a pencil.
Another writing tip: Write out other people’s sentences you admire.
Another writing tip: Explain why you admire other particular sentences written by other people in long, contemplative rambles.
Another writing tip: Recount things that bother you to find out why they bother you.
I followed each of these tips in my preparation of this piece concerning celebrity culture, disinformation, reaction, and response. By the time I had my writing assignment, I had the memory of Larry David addressing Donald Trump on live television, Philip K.Dick’s definition of disinformation, and a Rebecca Solnit quote I try to live by ready to go. I want you to read it, but if you only have time to read one more sentence, go with Ms. Solnit’s: “The revolt against brutality begins with a revolt against the language that hides that brutality.”
