John, my husband, knew a friend of Daniel and David Berrigan while John was a philosophy professor at Christian Brothers College in Memphis in the way back past. Jerry Vanderhaar was also a professor, a former Catholic priest and a Board member PAX Christi. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, as always. A call to action!
I love The Mission and have watched it many times! Thank you for this piece that highlights not only Daniel Berrigan's life but also the need for truth-tellers who insist they see, yes, what they see in this chaotic cultural moment of ours where sadly, there's plenty of gas-lighting and false teaching to go around.
“Law, after all, is liturgy writ large,” - wow! That comment pulled together a lot of mental shards for me. That’s so true! I remember Daniel Berrigan in the news back in the ‘70s - a courageous peace advocate. I will reacquaint myself with him. Thank you, David.
TY - first I’ve heard of Berrigan, won’t be the last. The Mission was a most influential work on me as at the time I was transitioning from a Jesuit-influencedCatholic upbringing to a “non-Denom, personal relationship with Christ” parachurch environment that has now left me spiritually orphaned a la ‘Jesus and John Wayne.’ Incarnational mission has always stirred me at my core - for me that is where purpose is found. Now I need to watch this movie again to compare my recollection 18 year old me to 50-something me for introspection. And download a Berrigan book😉
The Mission is one of the most inspiring movies I have ever seen. The first time I heard about Daniel Berrigan was when I was a junior in high school. My first thought was “Who are these priests burning draft files?” it didn’t take me long to realize what they were doing, was truly prophetic. They were living the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in a way I had never witnessed before. I have had the blessing of hearing Daniel Berrigan speak twice, and it continues to be one of the high points of my life. He modeled for me what a true disciple looks like. His memory is a blessing.
