Remembering Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“God consents to be pushed out of the world and onto the cross; God is weak and powerless in the world and in precisely this way, and only so, is at our side and helps us.”
That’s Dietrich Bonhoeffer speaking of the cross of Jesus of Nazareth. Jared Stacy placed the words in front of me today as a reminder that it has now been eighty years since the government of Germany murdered him. The image above (Secretary of State Marco Rubio displaying a black cross, possibly composed of ashes, on his forehead) is my choice.
Unanimously confirmed to his current position by my United States Senate, Secretary Marco Rubio is making morally unserious choices in my name all day every day. I wish he wouldn’t drag the memory of Jesus’ witness into it. When someone uses an association with Jesus to justify their abusive behavior, the word my tradition has for that form of terror is antichrist.
Given the confusion that sometimes arises when people speak of Jesus, it could be that we will always have antichrist with us. But tax-funded antichrist is something else. I want it to stop.
Meanwhile, Dietrich Bonhoeffer goes before us. I believe his words about God today.

Ive been calling this administration the living breathing incarnation of antichrist since they came into power. how the press secretary can wear a cross without it burning into her skin amazes me every time I see it. These are profoundly unserious, uncaring and incompetent people and their presence and actions are killing us.
