The Eternal Show: Joydoor
“I like the idea of providing a door for folks to enter joy.” These are some of Andy Harding’s words on Joy Door.
“That’s what Todd’s calling it,” Beth Gilmore tells me. “The joy door is a trick.”
“It’s the door that one may or may not choose to walk through to experience guaranteed joy—the problem is, in my/our context, there’s also the risk of…eternal damnation or…eternal recurrence.” That’s Alex Sager offering one read.
“Choose your cults wisely!” That’s Todd Greene on Joy Door. Also this: “Who’s behind the door?”
“Doing it yourself became a movement, like the punk movement before it, but it went beyond punk because not only did you not have to know how to play your instruments, you didn’t even have to know how to record them. It was the final frontier of punk.” That’s is Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices on the movement out of which arose Bee Thousand.
I can imagine all of my Hoo Collective mentors nodding knowingly upon hearing these words from Mr. Pollard. Beth, after all, is the first person I heard say, “Art is documentation.” I think that’s true. Hearing her say it helped me toward the realization that everyone’s invited to art. Art is documentation and integration too. Empire is power over (Can you feel it?). Art is power with (Can you feel it?).
*slams fist on table* More art!
The apocalypse is everyday. And the eternal show must go on. I am told that it will even after the iteration called Joy Door concludes. But if you want to step through the Joy Door with your body among other bodies, you’re gonna have to come out to The Rock Wall Gallery this weekend. Please consider joining us.
Any questions?
