I never know where to begin with Todd Greene. He’s my second favorite artist in the known universe. He’s been my muse since I was seventeen-years-old. His band, Bulb, is so crushingly obscure that, despite their thirty albums and three music videos, you can hardly even find them on the Internet. He cut straight to the dark heart of The Prayer Trade decades ago with one crucial image. He writes, directs, and stars in a COVID-era children’s program. Annie Dillard once phoned him up to tell him how much she loves his work. And, with The Accidental Exorcist, he gave us what I take to be the most powerful image of the Trump era.
Please research him and track him down and, if you want him in your life, contact him. But I say all of this today because, the man and his work will appear at Modfellows Art Gallery this evening. Details here. It’ll be an open air, masked, social distanced situation.
Talking about Todd is one of my favorite pastimes, so….feel free to go nuts in the comments. I’ll respond.
First I have ever been exposed. Thank you!
I am not sure what to make of the "Repent" image- I like it, though! What about it "cuts straight to the dark heart of The Prayer Trade?" My thought: the figure handing out the cone offers a temporary satisfaction, a quick pleasure soft served that distracts from true repentance.
Brilliant cartoon image. Todd is certainly one if my favorite people. I have two of his art pieces in our home and the Bulb recording Magical Thinking part 1 in my music library. It is a required record (interpret as you will. I'll never forget when a few of us were trying to imitate Stipe on Drive and Todd just picked up his guitar and nailed it. That's Todd Greene. Spot on.
