They’re buried all over the Internet, but Sarah Masen’s songs persist. I place this one, “Like Lightning,” before you today with a few words. There are various points of entry: the overcoming of the abusive man in a million households across the land, mimetic theory, toxic personalities as traumatized personalities. I invite you to let it do it’s work.
As much I esteemed him, I don’t think I have an awful lot in common with Lou Reed, but he has one psychic struggle I believe I can relate to. His partner was Laurie Anderson, and he once remarked that a fuller measure of her work, here there and yon, would garner her more popular attention. In a better age, he said, there would be statues of her in every major city.
I feel this way about Sarah. I’m not complaining. Her plate’s full and her waking hours are full of righteous work. But still, it would be nice if more people received, registered, and studied her gifts of insight. This song, produced by Charlie Peacock, is the tip of a very righteous iceberg. Make the most of it.
Ahh, this just gives me chills. Something about the way she sings it takes me back to the great moment of realization/reverie in an 80s John Cusack or Brat Pack film. I need to check out more of her catalog. And Charlie Peacock is, of course, the greatest.
Funny you write this. I was just in on my well-known music streaming service the other day and started checking her music out. I love the tone of your writing. I would take a class with you just to get a little bit of your tone if I could. I tried to find the Buechner interview you wrote of in another post this morning even if I didn't really have time for that. It's not even available in the Image archives (I subscribe). But so happy for the pointer to the other article which I haven't had time to read yet. I started it today, even if I didn't have time...
