I’m going to try to avoid being overly topical and news-cycle dependent in my posting of content on Dark Matter. *waves from within Dark Matter*
But discovering that The Washington Post (Full Disclosure: I’ve published with the Washington Post) has deployed the word “politics” in a peculiarly perverse way to explain their decision to ignore/suppress the story of the Alitos’ flag hoisting habits for three years has me wishing to voice a favorite thesis of mine again.
Where two or more are gathered, politics.
Or again with more syllables: The idea that "politics" is a thing that happens in a magical dimension separated from all other things is perhaps the goofiest idea of all. It is also catastrophically costly.
Clarification: I do not wish to villainize WP’s spokesperson for the content she’s been compelled to mediate on behalf of unnamed others within WP.
Reminder: There is no the media.
Stay safe, America.
I think that the way we commonly use "politics" is as a synonym for "partisanship" or American the ongoing contest between the democrats and republicans for our votes and allegiance. In a definitional sense, I think "politics" is the life of the city, i.e. our common life. Your thesis is powerful because it adds to our common life, Jesus and the life he called his followers to live. It also reminds people that even their interactions in their churches are political, in the sense that gathering with fellow citizens puts one into the realm of politics.
