The era that’s maybe kindasorta ending on January 20th brought some boldness out of me that I didn’t know was there and also helped me define what I mean by education, philosophy, poetry, and critical thinking. This piece, which tries to bring Octavia Butler, John Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, Fred Rogers, Beck, and Jeff Tweedy into conversation one another, might still be the best I’ve got for right now. Thank you if you’re among the many who’ve tried to persuade me that I haven’t lost my mind. And thank you if you’re among the many who believe I have but who keep listening, reading, and placing my work before other people anyway.
This is not only beautiful and lyrical writing, it left me in tears, a reminder that my humanity is diminished too if I diminish the dignity of another in using words like swords slashing in rage over politics. Strong words can be healing balm too if delivered with humility which grants dignity to speaker and hearer. Truth telling done well does not humiliate but invites to a more civil way of being and handling our grief and anger
