Whiteness is an investment in not knowing (or pretending to not know) things and belittling anyone within range who questions the soundness of that investment.
Received this headline in my email inbox this evening. Just after getting caught humming "Love Is Blindness" at the dinner table. . . I was ruminating on 1.) my 3 yr. old granddaughter's excitement about going to see "Larry the Lightbulb" celebrate Christmas at Benicia, CA 's megachurch. (I'm a formerly employed pastor in this town whose "style" was dismissed after 30+ years) 2.) Pete Enns's statement "I'm not ruining Christmas, you are!". 3.) The Bible's Christmas stories as radical confrontation of the "Peace" of Empire and Dominionism. 4.) "these people are ever listening but never hearing; ever watching but never seeing" (my translation)
I write this in affirmation.
Yes. We are invested in "not knowing (or pretending to not know) things and belittling [and/or ignoring] anyone within range who questions the soundness of that investment".
David, I’m not on Twitter much anymore, mostly just occasionally peeking through my fingers. I’ve started hanging out more on Post, and hope you’ll check it out sometime and maybe cross-post over there. You’ll find me there at: https://post.news/cdmatthewmurphy. (And I’ll continue to talk you up on Post and recommend your substack.)
Also: who ARE these many white people gathered on the stairs? Curious to know where this is. (A church, perhaps?)
I see someone (else) woke up today and chose violence. :-)

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me?

Last time I checked, they're the Board of Trustees of Hillsdale College.
