When we meet a demonic other, it pays to watch carefully how it reacts if we respond with the New Testament counsel to love our enemies. What does this other do with the libido and attention we give it? Does it use this energy to transform itself into a more positive expression? Or does it just swallow and devour this energy and grow fat on it and ask for more? If that is the case, then we can be sure we are feeding a demon…What do we do then? We starve it. We give nothing—no libido, no interest, no attention, no energy, no blood, no warmth, no life. We save all that for the conscious side.
Ann B. Ulanov, “The Psychological Reality of the Demonic”
Do you see what I see in the above image?
I don’t know what it’s called yet, but I do know it’s the work of Alex Sager whose work has been shared in these parts before.
I beheld it for the first time today and I’m already imagining the demonic other differently. Less frantically. I’m calmed by it
And here we have a lot going on. Do y’all spy some Todd Greene? Bingo! There is J. Todd Greene within the frame, but there’s also, I suspect, a little Alex Sager in there too and J. Andrew Harding and Todd’s parents, Linda and John. Todd’s offered his parents art classes in recent years and they’ve enrolled. Who does that? Todd and John and Linda.
So….it’s on y’all. By “it’s” and “on,” I mean “The Eternal Show: The Accidental Exorcist.” We’ve been here before, and it’s happening again. We have good work to do.
There’s art and there’s empire. Art is integration. Empire is disintegration. Art remembers. Empire dismembers.
Yes, every form of thoughtfulness feels more fragile than ever. But…we can be the thoughtfulness we want to see in the world. We can show up. We can talk about what we’re seeing.
And yes, you read that right. buulb is performing.
Y’all come.
Thanks for sharin all this, David. Hope to see you over there!
I appreciate your thoughts, Dr Dark.
I'm trying to track down the full text of the Ann Ulanov essay you excerpted. Was it published in a journal or in book form?
